Responsibilities

You will serve as a Health Physicist and the Brigade Radiation Safety Officer in the Public Health Command Pacific, Regional Health Command-Pacific. You will be responsible for: assignments involving radiation analysis; health physics protection surveys; gamma spectrometry analysis of food, water, and environmental samples and the interpretation of the analytical results and special studies for the evaluation of health hazards associated with the use or presence of radiation producing sources

Occasional travel - The business travel requirement is 15%.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: includes work that involves radiological worker safety training to identify required radiological worker safety training, develop and maintain automated training and recommend and implement changes to ensure personnel using radiation are properly trained, advise researchers and recommend changes to experimental procedures using radioactive materials, and respond to emergencies; ionizing radiation management to conduct radiation safety surveys, recommend actions to comply with radiation policy, and perform radiological surveillance of a variety of doses and types of radiological hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Time in Grade Requirement:Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).

Education

The Office of Personnel Management has identified the following minimum educational requirements for this position: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study from an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

  • OR-

Combination of education and experience - courses as shown in the preceding paragraph, plus appropriate experience or other education.

  • OR-

Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in the first paragraph above.

This position has positive education requirements and you must submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned).
